The Washington International Arts Festival will be held on May 1 & 2, 2010 on the 300-acre site of National Harbor, an exciting new community considered the gateway to the National Capital Region. National Harbor is located on the eastern bank of the Potomac River in Prince George's County, MD across the river from Alexandria, VA to which it is connected by a water taxi operated by the Potomac Riverboat Company. Alexandra is also serviced by the Metro Rail system that facilitates visitors coming to National Harbor from the Capital region. National Harbor is located just south of the I-495 Beltway that surrounds Washington, DC making the festival site readily accessible by car. It is estimated than 12 million people visit National Harbor each year with over 33 million domestic and international visitors attracted to the Washington, DC area.
The recently-completed National Harbor Resort and Convention Center is the largest convention center on the East Coast encompassing 470,000 square feet of indoor space and 2000 hotel rooms. The community has a rich complement of gourmet restaurants and retail stores. National Harbor also supports both the visual and performing arts. Music is offered throughout the summer months in both indoor and outdoor venues including the Harbor Fest Musical Concert in August. The community has also invested substantially in artwork. Fountains, sculptures and artwork are found throughout National Harbor. Some notable pieces include the sculpture "The Awakening" by J. Stewart Johnson that was moved from East Potomac Park in Washington, DC to National Harbor where it can be found rising out of the sand by the Potomac River. Visitors driving into National Harbor pass Albert Paley's renowned sculpture "The Beckoning".
The Washington International Arts Festival will be aggressively and effectively advertised throughout the Washington, DC area. Given the marvelous support from the community of National Harbor, we look forward to this partnership growing the festival into a premier cultural event. The strength being the unparalleled collection of world-class and award-winning artists we will bring to the event. As with all Paragon Events, this is about arts, artists, and art patrons.
